The Writing on the Mirror is a triumphant first novel from a new literary ingenue. It follows in the footsteps of legends like David Sedaris, and is a true page-turner! The characters are well-developed and keep the reader engaged through to the very end. If we are lucky, there will be a sequel, as these characters live larger-than-life, leaving the reader wanting more. The author has a clear and strong visualization of architecture from the pre-war era that is captivating and appears to be a testament to his preternatural talent. The detailed attention to placing the reader within the bespoke setting of his characters is a real strength.
I'm looking forward to more from this author!

Don't let the fabulous lives of the main characters fool you! Something is amiss! Although I deeply coveted the characters' lives in this book for the entertaining and fabulous mundanity they blithely inhabit, I had a great time reading this soapy mystery. The author has a knack for period detail and has obviously attended a lavish cocktail party or three! Good fun! Read it today!

The Writing on the Mirror is a solid debut novel from Mark Gonzalez. Two stories intertwine to tell the tale of an apartment building, its residents, and its troubling past. The author's writing is clear, strong, funny, and touching. It's obvious he loves the characters he's created! Each one is fully developed, making the reader care just as much as the author. Tension slowly builds throughout the novel, and the resolution is a bit of a surprise. I'm glad I explored the work of a new author, and I'm looking forward to more from him.
